Swansea High School student Arelly Silverio-Huerta performed her original poem “On Fire” in front of a live audience at a local venue in Columbia, SC, on January 28th. Several acts such as rappers, musicians and spoken-word artists from around the state preceded Arelly but she brought the house to a compelling silence with her captivating lyrical performance.
Arelly began writing poetry when she was in 9th grade as a way of expressing thoughts and feelings that she had difficulty speaking about. Now, she says, “I am ready to be brave and put myself out there.” All eyes and ears in the house were on Arelly as her mother watched her daughter with pride. “I’m grateful that my mom is willing to take me places so I can have these experiences.”
Arelly was greeted off-stage by owners and managers, and several members of the audience came by to praise and congratulate her performance. “I was really nervous, but I knew I wanted to do it.” When asked if she plans to perform again, Arelly answered, “Yes, I would like to participate in the youth poetry slam.”
